It can be treacherous and stressful to prepare your students for the state-mandated writing exams. While “teaching to the test” is not the answer, there are some simple tools you can give your students to help them to be more successful when writing their exam essays. One of the common frustrations teachers have is not being able to cover all of the expository writing styles in depth before the exam. That’s okay–I have a way of teaching writing that can be used for any style of writing. Let’s teach students how to write, not how to fill in a formula! Contact me for more information about how you can get your teachers prepared to teach for any purpose, exam or otherwise.
Do you, or your teachers, struggle with assessing student writing? It can be daunting to attempt a meaningful response to so many different aspects of an essay or other piece of writing. Where should you begin? I can help with that! Whether through a customized workshop, webinar, casual chat, or email exchange, I can help you determine where to focus and how to do it effectively and efficiently so that you can maintain your sanity and your students will get the meaningful feedback they need. Contact me to make it happen!
Are you ready for brilliance? Listen to this: “The drama of the essay is the way the public life intersects with my personal and private life. It’s in that intersection that I find the energy of the essay”
― Richard Rodriguez. That is an amazing quote, and I love to share this concept with writing students. The act of writing a well-thought out essay can help writers achieve a connection with the world around them, and that is really cool. Many students struggle with this concept, and if they don’t buy into this idea, then why write in the first place (other than because a teacher is forcing you to do so)? If you need help getting students to show any interest in writing, and maybe even have some fun doing it, let me know–I can help!
I am excited to facilitate a workshop today with an awesome group of teachers. We’re talking about how to help students create an effective outline, and how teachers can properly assess a student’s outline. Sound like something you might be interested in for yourself or your staff? Let me know! I can work with you on a full curriculum, a one-hour to one-day workshop, or just have a quick and casual conversation about some easy-to-implement tips and tricks. Contact me for more information.
I love this quote from Dustin Wax (www.lifehack.org). It highlights the fact that while writing may feel like a difficult task to slog through when required, anyone can learn to do it well (and it’s an important skill to have!). Need help getting started? Contact me–I’d love to help.
Whatever the writing need may be, I can help! I am available for private tutoring, group sessions, professional development opportunities, and more. Writing comes down to one important thing–effective communication–and that is important for every aspect of life. Let me know how I can assist you!
For many teachers, creating a writing curriculum, or just deciding how to get started, is really overwhelming. Whether it’s deciding on the assignments, lessons, or assessments, it can be daunting to come up with a plan that will make sense and make a difference in the writing classroom. One of the ways I can help is showing you how to create bite-sized pieces that students can digest and build on for future projects. It will be easier to manage and scaffold lessons to help students become proficient writers. Email me to find out how we can work together!
